Coseph Jonrad – R.I.P.

 

and so we reach the end: 13 albums in 13 months…

 

 

…and I left the hardest to last: this one’s not a remix of an actual album, but a compilation tape made by one of my stepfathers, which I inherited when I got my first walkman.

 

As you can see, the tracklisting is late seventies-tastic:

 

 

This was the only volume in the series where the loops were sampled from the actual original cassette (I used vinyl where possible for the rest) so it has particular weird grainy texture.

The end is in sight, yes it’s the penultimate installment of the Paper Round Tapes:

This one was very tough to do!

I’m pretty sure this is the single album I have listened to most in my entire life, despite only having listened to it a handful of occasions over the past 15 years…

…and it still scares me even after all that time.

This record is also probably to blame for my feeling that albums should always have narrative, and arc, a sense of movement.

Not as explicably as this of course, with full on narration; but I think you can feel a debt to this epic piece of 70′s over-the-topism in my Bss Clef albums (well, allright, maybe not, but I can….)

A greatest hits collection from the late seventies, since superseded several times over – I guess they are just one of those bands that get greatest-hitsetized a lot.

They have HITS. and STRINGS. and a VOCODER.

I still love them.

Coseph Jonrad – paper round tapes volume eight

Dear friends, I’m happy to present the last MAGIC + DREAMS release of the year….and what a year it has been…thank you all for your support!

 

 

So we reach volume eight and we’re two thirds of the way through…with the last volume (12) dropping tidily on the first birthday of M+D.

I can safely say that the original album this is a remix of, is the one I have listened to the least in my life since the paper round days…I bought it after heady rotation on Capitol FM of the lead single…having none of their previous, more successful, albums.

With the benefit of hindsight I can clearly credit this album with sowing the seed of my later obsession with african music, it’s rhythms and melodies. Though this album happily co-opts music from several continents…

I was truly obsessed with this album, and it was very difficult to come back to it after all this time, to try and make something new whilst attempting to recapture the wide-eyed wonder and world of escapism it had for me feel the first time round.

FREE COSEPH JONRAD ALBUM

Dear friends,

to celebrate reaching the halfway point of the ‘paper round tapes’ series,

I would like to deliver to you a free download of Coseph Jonrad’s ‘FIAT MILLION HITS’…

Normally in the PRT series I do a track-by-track remix of an entire album I obsessed over as a kid, but this time around it’s a remix of the first album I ever got.

Not the first album I ever bought, that came later.

Because this album came free with our car…

I really don’t remember the reasons,  but the car came with a scratch-card. I think top prize was another car.

The sleeve-notes jubilantly proclaim the many successes of FIAT and their million-unit-selling car. Again, I’m not sure why – we’d already bought the car.

They also somehow manage to tie car and album together with an environmental theme – about the island of Madagascar and it’s myriad endangered species.

How or why the car is helping I couldn’t say. There’s a reassuring picture of David Bellamy though.

Anyway what I remember most about the car (the only new car we ever had) was that it had a soft top. So, we couldn’t go to Windsor Safari Park, because lions would get in through the roof and kill us.

(not sure now why I wanted so badly to go to the safari park…I’ve never been as an adult and I’m fairly certain it would be sordid and rubbsh…)

ANYHOO, the ‘million’ theme is reflected in the tracks they’ve managed to beg, borrow, license, or possibly swap cars for, to fill out this ridculous compilation.

All the tracks had sold over a million. Get it?

I already had the 7″ of Ghostbusters (instrumental on the flip – awesome) and I don’t really remember if I actually liked the other tracks on this album, but I sure listened them all to death.

I read the sleevenotes over and over again (to this day Madagascar feels more like Atlantis or Never Never land than a real actual place to me).

Coseph Jonrad – paper round tapes volume six

So here we stand at the halfway point of the PRT series. Next month we pause, take a breath, do something else, before resuming the second half of this self-punishing schedule.

After three successive ‘Greatest Hits’ re-versions, this month we re-vert to a ‘proper’ album. I vividly remember buying this album in Heathrow Airport, with my paper round cash, just before taking my first ever flight. Putting the tape into my walkman whilst the plane was on the runway, and then woooosh….

This volume was actually the genesis, the egg, the prodigal daughter. The first in the series to be recorded, back in November of 2010. I had a microphone poking out of the window of the studio that weekend – the fireworks of Hackney liberally, randomly and joyously adorn this album.
